Name: Tim Caton Outstanding Athlete Award

Background:  This award has been instituted in memory of Timothy Caton, a former student and athlete at St.Luke Lutheran School, who died of cancer on December 16th, 1987, at the age of 15. He was diagnosed with cancer during his eighth grade year at St.Luke. While attending St.Luke, Tim participated in soccer, basketball, softball, and track and was recognized in league and tournament play as an outstanding young athlete.

Funding:  The cost for this award is to be taken from a special earmarked fund set up by the Caton family. In the event the money in the fund is not sufficient to cover the scholarship stipend, the St.Luke Board of Education is empowered to lower or eliminate the scholarship portion of the award.

Purpose:  The purposes for this award are as follows:
     A. To recognize an 8th grade boy and an 8th grade girl whose athletic ability and Christian conduct exemplify the philosophy of the St.Luke Athletic Program.
     B. To give financial assistance to the award winners if they choose to attend a Lutheran High School.

Description of the Award:
     1. Each winner will receive a plaque or trophy which is theirs to keep.
     2. A large plaque will be kept in the trophy case and each year the award winners’ names will be added to it.
     3. A $200 scholarship will be sent to the Lutheran High School Association in the name of each winner.

Minimum Criteria:  For a student to be considered for this award the following criteria must be met:
     1. A cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
     2. Participation and completion of 60% or more of available sports seasons.

Selection Process:  Selection shall take place during the month of May prior to the St.Luke Awards Program. The following procedure shall be adhered to:
     1.The Athletic Director shall determine the 8th grade students who are eligible for consideration of this award.
    
2.The Athletic Director shall distribute proper forms to coaches, teachers, and principal. (copies of the forms are attached)
    
3.The Athletic Director shall, after giving reasonable time for completion, collect forms from all adults involved in the selection process.
    
4.The Athletic Director shall then complete the final selection form for each candidate, and from the point totals, determine the award winners.
    
5.In the event of a tie, plaques will be given to all winners, and the scholarship will be divided equally.
    
6.All selection forms should be kept a minimum of 1 year and must be made available to the principal or Board of Education upon request.
